Weekend watch: Mr. Burns is back in town, TADADA!, Three Days of Grimm

The weekend is coming. And with it, your roster of entertainment possibilities. Which are legion.

Just about the most exciting thing on the spring calendar is finally here: Portland Playhouse takes on Anne Washburn’s MR. BURNS. You’ll travel indoors and out to three different sets for this epic. Opening night is Saturday.

Mr. Burns is back in town. And he's taken up at Portland Playhouse.

Also jockeying for position on Saturday night is PICA’s 20th anniversary gala: TADADA!. Come for the dinner if you’re feeling flush. But whatever you do, don’t miss the after-party helmed by Pepper Pepper. It’s all happening at The Redd, Ecotrust’s new event space on SE Salmon Street.

The Redd. One of the biggest parties of the year is going to be right here in two days.

And still ANOTHER Saturday night gem is a remount of David Saffert’s Liberace pageant at Curious Comedy.

Mr. Fabulous is back. One night only at Curious Comedy.

And for your Sunday night, perhaps you’ve heard of a certain play by Richard Greenberg coming to town? No, you probably haven’t heard of it that way. But you probably have heard that two TV stars from Grimm are in a show at Portland Center Stage. Ah yes. That one. Sunday night is the first preview.

And if you’re the pro active, plan ahead type – next Monday at PCS the Improv All Stars are back.

Dr. Joy is back | David Saffert’s 40th Birthday takes over the town

That aren’t many nights in the theatre that offer the kind of pure joy you’ll find on display at David Saffert’s 40th Birthday – The Liberace Edition.

With an all star cast including Liberace, Scott Thorson, Jillian Snow Harris and TriptheDark Dance Company, and a band including Jason Miranda on drums and music director Bo Ayars on piano (Ayars was Liberace’s REAL LIFE Music Director from 1973-1986), you can’t go very wrong here.

Directed by Stephanie Cordell.

Three more nights.

Your (partially glitter-free) weekend: Comedy with The Liberators and Liberace with David Saffert and Jillian Snow Harris

A weekend without glitter?

How?

Why?

While you won’t find “Oil Money” and the other girls from this year’s preposterously successful Critical Mascara: A Post Real-ness Drag Ball around town this weekend (though put Loveball on Sep 27 at Blowpony on your radar if you want more of that), here are a few other events to keep you (partially) glittering on.

Of course it’s the closing weekend of TBA:14. You know that. So we won’t get into listing out all the still significant items on the calendar to dazzle you. If you don’t know what they are, use Ask Jeeves and find out.

But did you know about these two lil’ numbers on Saturday night?

9.20 Bad Reputation Productions – SLINGSHOT
9.20 David Saffert and Jillian Snow Harris in LIBERACE AND FRIENDS at Mazza’s – 7:30 PM

Yup, neither one is traditional theatuh, but both promise an extremely high joy/hilarity-to-dollars-spent ratio.

SLINGSHOT is the ongoing comedy program by Shelley McLendon & Co in the studio at PCS. Perhaps you know The Liberators – or any of the fleet of chariots of mirth that McLendon seems to drive ceaselessly around the stadium track that is the Portland night life scene? Oh yes.

Meanwhile at the newly rechristened space on NE Sandy that used to be Tony Starlight’s, come see classical pianist turned cabaret maven David Saffert and Jillian Snow Harris as they evoke – who else – LIBERACE AND FRIENDS.

So that could help you get your glitter on.
