According to “The Count”, a new annual survey and analysis of the US theatre by Marsha Norman and Julia Jordan, Portland is below the already pitifully low national average of productions by women.
While only 20% of productions nationally in the last three years were by female playwrights, in Portland the number was 17.5%.
Not exactly an indicator of progressive leadership.
Could Portland’s absurd fixation on Shakespeare have anything to do with skewing the numbers toward male playwrights? I hope not. We’ll find out on Friday when the full study and underlying data set is released.
