Longtime Portland Mercury theater critic and Arts Editor Alison Hallett moves on

One of Portland’s sharpest theater critics has reached her final act. The Portland Mercury announced yesterday that longtime writer and Arts Editor Alison Hallett will be leaving at the end of August to take a new job at marketing firm Sheepscot Creative.

In a city where a lot of criticism skews towards the small-town-boosterism end of the spectrum, Hallett was a notably free and sharp spirit, and not afraid to drop the bomb when needed. In fact, the inability of Portland Mercury theater critics in general to write anodyne reviews famously got them and the paper banned from reviewing at Portland Center Stage in 2012.

Oops.

Good luck, Alison! You will be missed.
