No time like a Friday evening to slip some new info into the ether. Sometimes news breaks early if you’re watching. The official announcement is tomorrow but the web site is already updated.
And so here it is. Just for you.
Leading the way on Seattle Rep’s 2014-15 season is local playwright Robert Schenkkan’s two part epic on President Lyndon Baines Johnson, ALL THE WAY and THE GREAT SOCIETY, both of which originated at OSF (ALL THE WAY premiered in the 2012 season, THE GREAT SOCIETY premieres this coming July).
The two plays will run (mostly) simultaneously in rep on the main stage. You’ll want to plan on a rainy long weekend in Seattle to take in the whole story. This is the kind of epic undertaking that great regional theatres were born for but actually pull off all too infrequently these days. Bravo to Seattle Rep for making it happen.
Oddly, THE GREAT SOCIETY is being billed as a world premiere. Which it ain’t. It premieres at OSF this July.
Other quick notes on the Seattle Rep 2014-15 season.
There’s a new play by Seattle playwright Laura Schellhardt: THE COMPARABLES. Schellhardt’s THE K OF D did well at the NYC Fringe a few years back.
And for some reason they are doing the worst play John Patrick Shanley (or anyone else) has ever written (and hopefully ever will write), and one of the worst “Irish” plays ever – OUTSIDE MULLINGAR.
Don’t take my word for it. Read what Ireland’s legendary theatre critic Fintan O’Toole has to say on MULLINGAR.
Anyway – don’t miss the Schenkkan epic!
