Me talk funny one day – but not today: Stripped of exotic locale, CHINGLISH has nowhere near enough heart or character to reach real comedy

CHINGLISH by David Hwang at Portland Center Stage

From the first moment, not very funny. For anyone who has lived abroad (most of audience?), single running gag about mistranslation works for one joke, but not a whole play. Characters without depth, insight, authenticity. Enron sub plot painfully duct-taped on. Unsexiest sex scenes ever. Superficial entertainment, without much engagement.
