Travel the byways of remote SE Oregon, and you’ll find a number of small towns and outposts – “stations” as some of them are still called. As you cruise the hugely wide but often empty main drag of a place, you’ll notice lots of empty storefronts and offices. Life is not easy in the desert. It never was. But based on the number of closed facilities around, there was a time when life in these towns was busier and more prosperous than it is today.
Of all the relics from that previous era that lie gently fading beneath an infernal sun, the old town movie house stands out. Almost every town has one. They are going, going, gone. Some operate still. All are landmarks that should be preserved.
